Venice

"La Bella Venezia in Italia". Translated in English, this means, "the beautiful Venice in Italy". That's because beauty is just about what the city of Venice in Italy is, really. It is said that in Venice, the forces of water and light make a coalition to come up with a sort of magic that establishes the city of Venice as an interesting mix of old and new, and of fiction and fact. And, despite the fact that Venice is actually a city that is on very low land that is prone to floods in times of natural tragedy, this vulnerability just seems to add to the mystery and enchantment of Venice, thus deeming it more beautiful in the tongues of poets and the songs of musicians.

The city of Venice, which is composed of all of 118 islets on the stretch of the lagoon of Venice situated right on the Adriatic Sea, is known for the many titles that the poetic minds of people have concocted for it, such as the Queen of the Adriatic, La Dominante, the City of Light, Serenissima, the City of Bridges and the City of Water. All in all, the reputation that the majestic city of Venice bears is that it is among the best cities in the whole world when it comes to beauty, as well as the richest. Venice is the capital of the region of Veneto, hereby regarded as one of the richest and most developed regions of all the twenty regions in the country of Italy. Venice has an area comprising all of 412 square kilometres of land, or an equivalent of 159 square miles. The density of population in Venice takes up 655 square kilometres or up to 1,696 square miles.

Because of Venice's reputation as a romantic getaway, many tourists and honeymooners enjoy riding the gondola, the iconic mode of transportation in Venice. If you plan to visit Venice on your next vacation, check out travel sites that offer packages that can help you save money.

The people of Venice

One of the many festivals held in the beautiful city of Venice is the Venice Art Biennale. This festival celebrates the best of Italian art through exhibitions.

The population of Venice numbers to a total of around 269,000 to 270,000 people as per the census of the year 2008. As of 2007, women dominate the population, amassing more than 52 percent of this number, followed by the men at more than 47 percent. On the other hand, children and young adolescents account to about 14 to 15 percent of the people of Venice, while the elderly make up 25 percent of the population. A large majority of these people are Italians, numbering to about 93.7 per cent. Others are Romanians, East Asians and South Asians. Their primary language is still, of course, Italian.

Since Venice is mostly flooded and canals are prevalent, the major form of transportation in Venice is watercraft, such as the classical gondola, the ferry, the vaporetti or the water bus, the traghetti, and the water taxi. There is also a train that passes through Venice, as well as an airport, which is the Marco Polo International Airport.
