No Discontent In Dancing Richard
Newcastle Herald
Thursday August 31, 2006
THERE has virtually been a Shakespeare-related industry in Newcastle since June, with The Merchant of Venice, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead following each other into theatres.
Virtually Richard3, playing at the Civic Theatre on Tuesday and Wednesday at 8pm, continues this parade of doing interesting things with the Bard's work. The show, from Perth-based Expressions Dance Company, is described as a high-octane adaptation of the play Richard III, with its witty and attractive rogue central character. As in Shakespeare's original, this Richard is completely self-centred and cares for nobody. He lusts after danger, excitement and personal power. He's cruel, deceitful and revels in being a villain.Richard is danced by Dan Crestani, who has been performing the role around the world with Expressions for the past six years. Crestani describes the role as physically and emotionally demanding, but one that really gets his adrenalin racing.Crestani heads a company of eight dancers in the fast and exciting work.Tickets: $20 to $32. Book at Civic Ticketek, 4929 1977.
